As children approach 2 years old, their understanding of language and speech becomes clearer! Children begin to repeat language they hear in order to understand and retain new words. That’s why experience is everything!
It has been noted that children are coming into school with a reduced knowledge of language. This may be due to busy parents that do not give much time to sit and eat with their child around a table, or children that have been exposed to too much technology and haven’t had the opportunity to talk with others and develop socially in comparison to other children.
A walk to the park or even the shop can develop so many new words. What do they see, what do the hear? Where are you going? Naming the colour of the cars all help.
Including children in your housework can really help them become engrossed in new language. Such as folding laundry and naming the clothes item or colour of it!
Some places to visit over the holidays are also free or cheap.
I took my nephew to tropical world in leeds. This was free for him and only £6 for me.
The amount of language he gained from it through seeing and observing the animals was amazing and he was able to communicate what he saw to his parents when he got home too!
Any experience is so valuable to children and provides them with so many learning opportunities!
